"The feast o
St.Sebastian blends Portuguese traditions,
ancient folklore and Roman Catholic
rituals
with Afro-Brazilian rites.
Ceremonies in churches and streets
feature
plenty of red coloring,
the votive shade of the city's patron saint.
In voodoo
temple-yards,
drums set the beat for chants and dances
in honor of Oxossi,
voodoo king of the jungle.
This date also marks the end
of Twelfth Night
revelries.
The main event is an evening procession
carrying the saint's statue
from
the Church of São Sebastião dos Capuchinhos
in Tijuca to the Metropolitan
Cathedral,
for blessing at a Mass
held by the Archbishop of Rio
de Janeiro."
