Chinese and Brazilian tourists are prolific shoppers,
just as the
Japanese were in the bubble days of the 1980s.
Just in 2010, Chinese tourists
spent $5 billion in the US,
a 39% rise over 2009.
Brazilians spent $5.9 billion
here in the same year,
a 30% increase.
US Commerce Department
data shows that in 2010,
the latest year for which comprehensive data is
available,
the greatest portion of Chinese visitors,
46%, came to the US
primarily for business.
Brazilians, on the other hand,
come overwhelmingly for
pleasure;
94% of Chinese and 91% of Brazilians report
doing a lot of shopping
during their stay.
Far fewer bring their real and yuan
